This works, but it seems awfully convoluted. Does anyone have a better

There isn't any easier way.
But if you open your default file, create those expressions and assign
them to meta-tools which you can remember easily, then save the default
file back as a template, you won't ever have to create them again and
will always have them available so it won't be all that convoluted after
you get them created.
