I think it should be reported to MakeMusic as a bug, as there's no
excuse for Finale the program to use an algorithm that does *not*
check that the filenames it produces are valid before attempting to
write them. Either it should tell the user it can't do it, or it
should do some kind of substitution in the filename.
Especially considering the fact that the error message one gets (in
2004) - "Cannot rename file" - is not very helpful.
It's especially not helpful considering that the error message SHOULD
be: "Cannot create file -- illegal character in filename"
It's this sort of longstanding bug which should be addressed somewhere
amid all these upgrades, but it seems it's easier and more marketable to
tout new textured paper and GPO playback (watch out for bass clarinets
and saxophones, though!) and other stuff than to address some core issues.
