Another price comparison which would have to be made would be how much
replacement parts would cost -- if one of the Mac memory modules goes belly up,
how much would it cost to replace it. If the Mac motherboard fries, how much
would a replacement cost? If the hard drive dies, how much to replace it?
Memory module: The exact same as for a PC.
Motherboard: Although Apple does have a comparibly good record for
replacing motherboards for free, if the worst comes to the worst, it is
probably more expensive.
Harddrive: The exact same as for a PC. As with most other parts in fact.
None of these parts are proprietry parts, they are all standard, and can
be replaced with similar items from the cheapest PC online shop.
The last part where Macs were not using standard hardware, other than
the motherboard and related things, were floppy drives. Since Macs were
the first computers to not have any of those any more, the hardware is
largely standard.
I think Darcy's comparison still makes some sense at this time, since it
is actually quite difficult to find PCs of similar specs on the market
at all. However, this will undoubtedly change very soon. We will see
whether Apple will drop the prices according to what the market offers.
At this minute it may well be true that the new Mac Pros are in fact
some of the best deals on the market in this particular range.
