Hello!

I need your wisdom.

I'm starting to adjust to the way Linked Parts behave. I have two (major) concearns though:

- I want measure numbers to have a completely different look/placing/size in my score than in the parts in the file. Any ideas on how to solve this in a good way (without saving the score in a separate file, destroying the very idea of linked parts) ? I think there should be options in Meas.Nr Attributes Dialog like "Show only in Score" vs "Show Only in Parts"

- When using the Special Part Extraction process (saving every part as a new file containing the whole score, with the selected part in page view) as saved massives of time because the system locks remained as I choosed the next part. I could use the layout of Trp. 1 and just "pour" Trp2 right into it. Is there any way now in linked parts to quickly copy a measure layout from one part to the next?

Also, my adjustments to measure withs doesn't stay in place as I move along to the next part? Is there a way to avoid this? This also apply to music-spacing. I always have to run music-spacing again to have the part look correct. (I have "Automatic Music Spacing" checked.

Thankful for any thoughts or help!

This has happened to me before when doing my part extraction using Special
Part Extraction method (a real time-saver; for those not hip to it, I'll be
happy to post the steps again).

Since I use the Staff tool to select the new staff and apply SPE, sometimes
I forget to switch to Mass Mover before hitting the 4 key, which results in
transposing the part to Tenor Sax instead of note spacing it. This still
happens to me every other week or so, and I usually catch it right after
I've done it.

I didn't get any import duties this time with 2007 (USA-France).

Maybe I was lucky! But I noticed that MM had placed a sticker on the package that stated that tax had already been paid on the item etc.

I paid $138.90 in total.

Thanks for this information, Jonathan. But the difference might be that I need a large upgrade (from 2004), and that I think there is a limit under which you don't get stuck with importe taxes.

So I'm still wondering what I should do. I got my last one directly from MM, but between the shipping charges (almost 40$) and the taxes (another some 40$), I thought it might be cheaper to order from Europe this time. So I wrote three times already to the French dealer (since the end of June), and he still hasn't given me his price. Nor has he replied to my last email of over a week ago.

I wrote to all the other official dealers in the Euro zone, and am surprised by the differences in prices quoted, from 150 euros (Germany) to over 200 (Belgium and Portugal). In the best case, only 50$ more than MM's price in the US (150$). In the worst, almost 120$ more. Of course, not everyone answered. The Spanish are on vacaciones until the end of the month.

This doesn't sound like the best international sales policy to me. Shouldn't MM be a bit more picky on their choice of dealers et do away with those that don't even reply to customers? And shouldn't they have some kind of control over the prices if they have "official dealers"?

Dennis

I think the import limit is just pure chance and luck on the day. I've ordered CDs from Amazon USA value between $50-$100 and been clobbered for the tax. Less than $50 I usually get away with. I even had a Band score & set from Switzerland last month that got held up for a week and then I had to pay more tax, yet orders from Boosey & Hawkes in UK come through fine, no matter what value.

This is just all double taxation as far as I can see.

I used to use Editnote for finale upgrades but they messed up the auth. code on two upgrades so I gave up. I complained to MM about this. They were always a month or two behind anyway, but they do specialise in the French language version that comes out much later in the year (I just recieved the promo for Fin2006), I use the English version.

August was never a good time for any mail order over here ;-)

Bienvenue la rentrée!

( montréal )

In UK I have paid 85 GBP, from Musicroom.com. Shipping by Royal
Mail was free.

This is my first upgrade from UK. Previously I updraded directly
from US but was then asked for a customs duty and the total seemed
to be more than if I had bought from UK suppliers.
Has the price gone up this time?

This is the small upgrade. The large one is 210$ (60$ more than MM's price...).

Subject: [Finale] Split Stems for Clusters

Hi.

I am fairly new to Finale and am on the normal steep learning curve that all newbie's have.  So far I have done pretty  well.. But I want to write a some 8th note clusters.. i.e. Aflat,  Bflat and B nat

What is the best way of doing a "splayed" or "split" 8th note stems?

Is there a trick to this.

NB I am using WinFin2006

Being a newbie simple advice is best.

I would ask my University school mates but they all use Sibelius as it is the software that is on all the University equipment and so all my mates have gone with that notation software.   (also virtually all the high schools here now also use Sibelius) I am the odd one that is using Finale.

The best place to start would be to find a book that contains something
like "The Theme From Lawrence of Arabia" or such, and find that copyright
holder (the tune, not the book) and try to contact them.

Maurice Jarre or the film production company likely own the copyright, not
Gower Publishing, which would only have obtained a license to publish the
Reed arrangement for concert band, and they would have no legal authority
to issue any further permissions beyond issuing you replacement parts.

In the U.S., derivative works are all still protected by the original
work's copyright as long as the copyright is still in effect.

Another possibility might be to contact Masters Music Publications, which
publishes a couple of works of Dr. Reed's. They may be able to point you
to the proper source.

Still another possibility would be to join [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
ask Clint Neiweg, former librarian for the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is
very knowledgeable about tracking down such obscure information on
publishers.

Finally, taking the "as long as nobody knows I'm probably alright"
approach -- as long as your band owns a copy and as long as you have tried
in good faith to find the proper channels to obtain either replacement
parts or permission, go ahead and do it. It's the same sort of risk we
take every time we drive over the speed limit -- even with increasing
fines for speeding, everybody does it all the time (including the cops
even when they're not on official business with their lights flashing).

But print out things like your original message to this list and any/all
other on-line inquiries you make so that you can demonstrate that you've
made a good-faith effort to do the right thing.

Do you mean something like this?

What I did here was to make three 8th notes into one 8th note beat space
using Tuplet Tool,
Made two 8th note's stems go away with Special Tools,
Extend the middle 8th stem with Special Tools,
And drew two stems with Smart Shape Tool.

Hm. I just realized I haven't done this since FinMac3.2 days. There
got to be a better way!

This is a very creative work around. But you are correct, I hope
there is an easier way.
