Or he could use non-printing expressions, one to set the velocity to 0
and another to set it to the dynamic he wants when the clapping stops.

Of course, this mutes these staves for the entire piece, which I'm sure
Stan doesn't want. He only wants the staves muted when the clapping
takes place.
To do this, he could either reduce the velocities of the clapping
sections to zero using the MIDI Tool (and be sure that Human Playback is
set to "incorporate" user MIDI data, or he could move the clapping
sections to a layer that with "Playback" unchecked. (This will require
changing the Staff Style definition to apply to the appropriate layer.)

Stan,
Go to the instrument list window, pick the offending staff and there
will be a mute selection on the left. You can also do this in studio
or mixer view. It's not hard. Look in any of these places and you'll
find a mute "switch".

I've done a wind band arrangement which involves some clapping. To
notate the clapping I entered the notes of the bass (16va with my
required rhythm, not the same as the bass) then used the staff style
for rhythmic notation.
Of course, during playback, I can hear these notes - which I don't
want to!
How can I mute the bits with the clapping notation?
