Martha,
first of all, please keep these questions on the Finale list. Other
people might find the answers helpful as well, or may be able to add
valuable information. Also, I prefer to keep this correspondence on the
list. Remember, I am not MM's support person, and will choose myself
which questions I can answer. If you haven't signed up for the list, do
so if you need help. Here are the instructions:

You are not really on version 3, are you?
Although I have no experience with version 1.0 (when was that?) I don't
think the basic workings for music spacing have changed. There will only
be a second white box once a beat chart has been created. To create a
beat chart you will have to select all or part of the document with the
mass edit tool (all parts) and invoke music spacing. Note spacing is
invoked by pressing "4".
Otherwise, I really think you should read the manual about music
spacing. It seems to me that you simply haven't understood how it works
and what it does. There should rarely be a need to use the Position
notes options, exactly as the manual states.

I am so thankful to have found this repository of Finale knowledge. I hope you
will expand on the beat chart spacing issue for me.
I do a lot of work for which I want to use the Beat-Chart Spacing attribute.
In my previous version (1.0), two white boxes appeared on the barline instead
of two (measure tool) by default. Now (3.0) only 1 box appears.
What I'd like to do is:
set beat-chart spacing as the default for every time I open a new file
or
set it as default for the file in which I am working
or
program a fcn key to take me thru the dropdowns and right to the beat-chart
dropdown so I only need to hit Enter (I know about Alt + MB but hope to avoid
the extra mouse slide to get to the teenyh arrows in the Position Notes
dropdown)
or
fix one measure and use some kind of repeat fcn to change the rest of the
measure (^C and ^V don't work); select + enter doesn't duplicate the action - -
setting for the beat-chart spacing - - as is the case with articulation marks;
what it will do, when another measure is clicked, is take me to the MB dropdown
directly but that's all
1. I have tried to program a fcn key but it appears not to work further down
in the nesting than the main tool itself.
2. I also have tried setting the "change every x measures" to 100, hoping to
change the entire piece, but again no joy.
3. The help manual unhelpfully states:
"You'll rarely need to use the Position Notes: options, which govern how the notes
in the selected measure are positioned-particularly if you're in the habit of using the
Music Spacing command to neatly respace the notes in your scores."
and then doesn't tell us how to get there with any efficiency!!
4. Tech support has been notably unforthcoming.
5. So now, in scouring the web, I have found you and hope that you will have
time to answer my question. Thank you ever so much! (This is not my first
problem with 3.0 and makes me very leery of upgrading!!)
Beth
