Ted Ross (The Art of Music Engraving & Processing, p. 15) refers to
"The pewter plate (commonly called "tin") which is used in this type of
engraving, consists of antimony, lead, and tin; and has many advantages
over early plates made solely of either zinc or copper (the more tin there
is in the plate, the sharper the printed work will be.)"

Gamble (Music Engraving and Printing) devotes a 7-page chapter to
"Production of Engraved Music - the Pewter Plates", including variations
in the formula for the alloy, with an interesting 1923 perspective.
