Hello All,
I am completely new to Finale. I bought Finale 2007 just a couple of days ago.
Congratulations, Dr. Denayer. I think you will find you have acquired top-flight notation software.

I find myself respectfully disagreeing with Chuck: you can specify which view you want as the default for a new document on Edit > Program Options > New; back-up options are selected in Edit > Program Options > Save; and the default location to save files are specified in Edit > Program Options > folders.

May I suggest that you take the time to read and work through the greater part of the tutorials, both those in the installation manual that accompanied the package (IIRC, new users are provided with a printed copy, but if not it's the lowest button in the Learning Center in the start up splash screen). While there are some bits that you may be able to profitably skip, these are a fairly good introduction to how Finale works. Also, you might want to review the section in the Users Guide, and review the video tutorials. Thought there are some things that you might want to defer until later, (for example, I never work with popular music, and have not set any music with chords, so that is an area in which my Finale knowledge is inferior to my knowledge of other areas; but I do intend at some point to go back and review this material.

If I may amplify a bit about ~.BAK files, when you attempt to save a file, if you have the program configured to do so, upon saving, Finale will rename your original file by changing the file extension. For example, suppose you choose to save the third exercise with the name, "exercise3.mus". When you save the file, the second time, Finale will rename the first save from "exercise3.mus" to "exercise3.bak", and then save the latest version as "exercise3.mus" (This is only good for one level; the third time you attempt to save to the same filename, the existing "exercise3.bak" is overwritten; for this reason I prefer to create my own incremental backups, so that if I decide that I was an idiot three saves ago, and I am now on a musical dead end, I can easily recover the file I was working on at that time.) I would also recommend periodically checking in at the MakeMusic! website; two or three times a year, there are maintenance upgrades and patches released which you can download and apply. The crashing problem you mention may be addressed by one of these. Availability of these upgrades is usually, but not always, mentioned by someone in this forum.

Happy Notesetting
