I am a MAC user and I have to manage well over 60,000 Mac only finale files
for a publisher that are mostly choral/vocal files. It has been a difficult.
I have to keep an old machine around (and some backup "old" machines) to run
OS9 so I can open files from version 3.5.2 up to 2003 which I do on a daily
basis.

If you are dealing with vocal music my best advise is to map out a long term
plan to upgrade your files. Moving directly into 2006 from 3.5.2 or 2.0
files has been working well for me. With the help of QuicKeys and
FinaleScript a lot of the issue of upgrading can be automated. You will
still have to proof these files because everything is thrown everywhere but
not as bad as other upgrades. At the same time...if you are dealing with
lyrics and Postscript fonts you should make the change to Open Type fonts.
Finale 2006 and 2007 do not handle special characters like option-spaces
unless you are using Open Type fonts. They really dropped the ball on
postscript support after OS9.

If you are dealing with Instrumental files I would say you do not have to do
the intensive proofing required by vocal music so it should be much easier.

...but you will never know when MM will decide that the program's internal
meaning of what 1 EVPU means is going to change, which they did because of
this list's complaints of default line thicknesses many years ago. Stupid
decisions like that can throw everything off.

This unfortunately is the reality of the poor policies of Coda and MakeMusic
when it comes to supporting old files. They need to make a standard and
stick with it but unfortunately it is too late...most of the damage is done.
