No. NOT stupid. The laptop manufacturers hide the external monitor port on the back, which you rarely, if ever see....

Besides, I only recognized this solution because of my personal history. I had a need to monitor my landline for incoming calls, and since I already had a PC I wasn't using for anything else, I purchased telephony software for the machine. Since all it did was monitor the phone line, and since I had an extra monitor cable, I didn't see the need to have a monitor constantly attached, so I used the monitor I used for my more general work, connecting it to the PC answering machine when I needed.
