Try Handbrake. It is a great utility for getting material from a DVD to your desktop.

Uh, it's possible it was still active. When I loaded the DVD, it automatically starts the DVD Player, which I thought I shut down when I opened up the Disk Utility, however I might not have actually quit it. I'll have to check that out.
