Well then, I assume that PDFs created straight from Finale must automatically embed all the fonts it needs--for example those I created myself (because I can see them in the resulting PDF file). Can I therefore also assume that if the result looks good to me that it will look the same to anybody? Or have I missed something here?

Upon researching your question, my first thought was to:

save as PDF via the Print function in Finale,
then open the PDF in Preview
then Save As into the TIFF format from within Preview
then Save As back into PDF again from within Preview

This sort-of works - the problem is that the TIFF only saves at 150dpi. I cannot find any setting to change this :(

However, the problem of font embedding is apparently solved by printing to PDF-X format.
