Well, I experimented and found out that Finale has line settings that
aren't too fine, at least insofar as they show up onscreen and in
TIFFs (I tried various resolutions and the results were the same).

I tried these line thicknesses:

.00998 (my original recommendation)
.005 (too thin)
.0075 (identical to the first)
.0065 (identical to .005)
.0075 (identical to .005)

(new graphics in http://www.dfenton.com/images/DottedSlurs/ )

So, it seems that half thousands are the smallest increments that
make a difference.

And unfortunately, neither side of the equation works for me.

Of course, I'm not testing printout (broken printer). Perhaps in
printout there's a difference?

In any case, none of it bears up to close examination, I'm afraid,
and in a good quality printout, would stand out as unrefined.
