It was interesting to hear Claudio Abbado in the 1970's talk about workingmen's matinees at La Scala that were new at the time, so that "Teatro alla Scala was [then] for everybody." Better late than never, I guess. Then again, how many people can afford Broadway extravaganzas nowadays?
