Well, as it turns out, lyrics do copy properly, and while it seems random, the behavior you observe is a necessary predicate to the way Finale handles lyric assignments. While it seems random, it is not. Now, as to whether there is any way to copy music so that the lyrics wind up in the correct position on the system, there is probably not a clean way to do what you wish to accomplish. While there may be more, I have used two work-arounds. My current preference is not copy the lyrics. In the dialog (or one of them; they were merged at some point, and I don't remember exacrly when) related to the mass mover tool, there is an option to specify items to copy. One option is to copy everything; the other option is a choice to select which measure attached items, and which note attached items you wish to copy. Lyrics are a note attached item, so to copy the music without copying the lyrics, one elects to copy note attached items, and in the check box dialog that appears. make certain you do not have "lyrics" checked.

The other option, is to copy the lyrics, but adjust the baselines. When you copy the lyrics, Finale places the copied lyrics in a new verse; one can have these look right on the score by adjusting the baseline of the target part of the lyric space to match the baseline of the source part of the lyric space, either by using the "adjust baselines" entry in the drop down menu associated with the lyrics tool, or by moving the appropriate triangle in the box which appears when one selects the options to either "click asssign", or "type into score".
