I am having problems using the tenuto articulation (line above/
below a
note-head) when applied to repeated notes. The default playback
is 'change
of duration' set to 105%. This works fine when the notes vary,
but used on
a repeated note, the playback is bizarre. The first note works
okay, but
subsequent notes are shortened, including the first note following
the
tenuti without the sign. I have attempted to fix this by
increasing the
duration, which makes some notes better but some worse.
Does anyone know a playback combination that will work on repeated
notes? At the moment I have decided the best option is to create a
copy with no
playback effect.
Try setting it to 100% -- after all, if each quarter note (for
instance) of a 4/4 measure is set to a length of 105%, the total
length of the measure will have to be increased by 20%, which
Finale isn't equipped to do without changing tempo or using
fermatas. So what is happening I think is that it has to get that
extra 5% from somewhere, thus the shortened other notes.
The reason it works alright on different notes is that the second
note is begun before the note-off for the first note is sent,
making for very smooth playback. But the same note can't receive a
note-on while it already has a note-on in effect on the same
channel, since it's already on.
A note actually CAN receive a note-off message while it is on—the
result is that the note stops! This is indeed what is happening to
Michael's playback. Your solution of 100% will probably work, but if
there is stuttering or artifacts still, then 99% might solve it.
