Just to balance things out, let me observe that not every publisher feels the necessity to avoid wedges. I am one of these. I find that I have to tweak some beams for other reasons whether I use Patterson Beams or not, and since using the Patterson plugin is an extra step in the editing process, I simply don't use it.

I can understand that. The original reason for avoiding the wedges had to do with ink running into them on presses making ugly smudges etc. Now we don't have that issue, so they are less bothersome. I have simply gotten used to the way things look with Patterson Beams, and I find - for my eyes, that the music is marginally easier to read using them.
