Can't get what you suggested to work. This is what was my original
problem. The piano bracket won't show up and is why I wondered if it has
anything to do with the fact that I'm using guitar staves instead of piano
staves. Any ideas? Is there something I checked or didn't check on the
bracket menu to cause this.........or maybe document options? I don't think
I did anything in document options on this particular page yet.

Yes, you can do that -- you create a group of those two staves and select
whichever bracket you want -- in your case it would be the piano bracket.
To create groups, using the Staff tool you click one staff handle,
shift-click the second handle, then ctrl-shift-click it again and the
dialog to create a group will open up.
