I've used two different ways to number hymn stanzas depending on how you want them to line up. Most of the time I just put two "non-breaking" spaces between the verse number and the first word--option space on Mac, Alt-0160 on windows. The other way is what you suggested, a hidden rest or note which allows you to adjust the space between the number and first word independently if you wish/need.

Subject: [Finale] Help with numbering hymn stanzas

Can someone remind me how to number the stanzas of a hymn? Finale doesn¹t
seem to like a space between the number and the first syllable of the lyric.
(Maybe I could attach the number to an invisible rest or note, but surely
there¹s a better way???) This may be in the documentation, but I couldn¹t
see it. Thanks!!

For example:

1. A-mazing grace . . . .
2. ¹Twas grace . . . .
