In keeping with the metric system now in use throughout the rest of the country, the Ministère de l'Education has decreed that from now on, music courses taught in colleges in Québec will now use a ten-note scale, rather than the present Imperial English system of twelve notes. This will increase student success by reducing the possibility of wrong notes by 8.33%, and make grading easier on theory assignments as well.

there is history behind this decision that not everyone might be aware of. i'm happy to be able to share my knowledge in order to give these people a "heads up"...

in brief, since:

- reading sharps and flats is an increasingly unsuccessful enterprise amongst performers since the infamous schoenbergian crisis of 1909;
- most students today use computer notation programmes;
- some putz made the arbitrary decision that finale®© should be the measure of something and thereby prove its worth; - one finale octave (the "absolute octave" according to ISO 8854.a-98_ack) is equal to 120 EVPUs,

it was decided that musical intervals will now be measured according to their position on the staff with a new 10-note scale, whereby each shift in position on the staff - space to line to space - now corresponds to the base interval of 1/10 of the octave, that is, 12 EVPUs.

the new 10-line staff and how to read it will be explained in a future document as soon as the ministry can figure it out for itself.

technicians with crowbars will be visiting the colleges in Quebec soon to adjust the pianos by removing the extraneous notes and moving the neighbouring notes over to fill in the gaps.

(ok you flushed out the reformist insider on the list... heh heh heh)
