You were right ... it wasn't a custom install, but the soundfont was indeed
missing from the component files. I dragged the one from the Finale 2006
folder and it works fine.

Wow, that's odd! The SoftSynth allows us to point the program to any
softsynth on the computer, so I'm curious as to why with no soundfont in
the component files directory, your softsynth settings dialog wouldn't
open up for you.
It's good to know that we need to at least leave the default soundfont
in the component files directory while we point to other soundfonts on
our computers, so that we won't run into the same problem.
I'm glad you resolved the issue!
