Actually, I did eventually come to the conclusion that making each system a single measure would save me a lot of hassle in the long run. But I forgot about the split/merge plugins -- thanks for the reminder.

no! make each smallest unit a separate unit, you will have much more freedom in layout later and in the parts.

The problem in this case is that, at least the movement I'm working on, each staff has a different number of total notes (visually, they are all "eighth notes"). But visually, the composer wants the final note of the movement in each staff to line up. So I think in this case, it makes more sense to use long single measures and invisible tuplets.

The other thing is that the composer wants all the notes beamed, and Robert's "beam over barlines" works better when there are fewer barlines.

set the spacing at the start of the measure (measure tool) to -25; do NOT space the parts when extracting, do the metered parts manually after extraction, so the placement of everything stays in place in the non-metered bits.

if you insist on one measure / system, make sure the score and parts are the same format and percentage reduction so you can use the same layout for the non-metered measures.

I think they're close enough that I can get away with the same system breaks in the parts as in the score.

Cheers,

- Darcy
