In the editions I use I'm used to seeing neither left barline nor brace in this situation. This doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule: I have at least one score where a left barline is put on a single optimized staff. But the majority of editors seem to agree: when a system is optimzed down to one staff, left barlines and braces are not necessary.

I'm working on a set of songs with varying instrumentation (alto flute, soprano, alto, string quintet, string quartet). The first song is for soprano and solo violin. When I optimise the staves, Finale puts no braces on the staves. The composer however insists on having the staves braced. Who is right, Finale or the composer? I couldn't find anything on the subject in my music notation handbooks. In another situation, when the alto flute plays solo (a ritornello), he wants both a left barline and a brace. Is he right?
