Thank you for pointing us to that PDF file -- there is no specific
mention of musical works nor urtext editions, such as was mentioned in a
previous post, and the terms "scientific editions" and "scientific
analysis" are troublesome to me. Is an urtext edition of the works of
Mozart a scientific edition or a musical edition? There being no
definition in the law of what constitutes a "scientific edition" nor
what "scientific analysis" consists of, I am still not convinced that
critical editions of musical works are only protected for a period of 25
years under current German law.
But that may just be the "grumpy old, gee, why aren't I independently
wealthy Saturday morning" me speaking.
As with all copyright laws (and indeed, all laws, it would seem) this
leaves much room for interpretation and it will be interesting to see
what Barenreiter does to some reprint company such as Dover, when they
try to bring out their own printing of a Barenreiter critical edition 25
years after the intial copyright.
