Pages doesn't share any code with AppleWorks. It was built fresh from the ground up. It's not very much like a standard word processor at all. It's much more like a stripped-down, more user-friendly version of InDesign. (For instance, they *really* try to force you to use Styles instead of just selecting a block of text and changing the font arbitrarily.) If only it were faster and didn't have the line spacing problem I mentioned, I'd be much happier with it.

I was hoping the line spacing shortcoming would be fixed with Pages 2, but no dice. Apparently Pages 3 is due out relatively soon, so we shall see. It does seem pretty stunning that they would even think about shipping this kind of product without including the ability to specify precise line spacing, but every so often Apple's software people do quirky things for no apparent reason.
