Thanks, Aaron and Christopher. It worked like a charm! Must admit I felt
rather stupid for asking after reading the "hint" that appeared after
clicking on the Beam Angle Tool....the use hadn't been immediately clear
just by looking at the icon. :)

To shorten stems on beamed notes (and move the beam along with them),
use the Beam Angle Tool in Special tools. Click on a measure, and
then move the left handle on a set of beamed notes. (Moving the right
handle will just change the angle of the beam.)
