Dear list,
I'm having trouble "figuring" out how to place a combination of a
Roman numeral analysis and other markings. I have attached a graphic
that should help explain my problem. I need to place this Roman
numeral analysis into a musical example. However, the way I have
done this needs to be altered in several ways. First, I need to show
the flat-II chord in the second measure as a II with a strike-
through. I have currently entered the analysis as lyrics, those
showing the analysis relative to e-minor as verse 1, and those
showing the analysis relative to C-major as verse 2. This is causing
several problems.
First, it's quite a hassle to adjust the first measure with the
leading "(e minor) T:" marking. If I just have to live with this,
that's fine. But, I would also like to place an enclosure around the
"T:" and "SM:" markings. I can't seem to do this with the lyric
tool. Is the only way to do this to create an expression with the
shape designer?
Also, I need to show the flat-II in the second bar as a II with a
strike-through. I can only seem to change the text style to
underline, bold, italic or hidden using Edit Lyrics. Is there a way
to make this strike-through, or must I resort to the shape designer
again?
Further, when I go to Edit Lyrics and select the "II", the Character
Settings menu is grayed out--any idea why? And, as a matter of
curiosity, if I were show this flat-II using a flat symbol instead of
a strike-through, I'd like to change the baseline shift of the flat
symbol to align properly with the Roman numeral. The Baseline Shift
option in the Text menu when I'm in the Edit Lyrics dialog box is
also grayed out. I was able to adjust both the Character Settings
and Baseline Shift when in Edit Lyrics just a while ago. What might
I have done to lose these options?
Finally, the process of using the Chord tool to create Roman numerals
is quite easy, but, I've come across two problems. First, what is
the easiest way to create Roman numeral markings when coupled with
figured-bass figures? If I use the Chord tool, it seems like (per
the manual) the best way is to create individual suffixes for each
chord type, quality and inversion. That would be quite a task.
Tackling this with the Shape Designer seems to be equally as
daunting. Second, what would I do, in a case like this, where I
would like to show the analysis in relation to two or more keys? Is
there a way, as in the Lyric Tool, to show several different lines
(or verses, sections, or sections; like the Lyric Tool) of chords?
