I would say that no matter what the circumstances you will always reach that point eventually. There may well be great variation depending on the situation -- for good musicians you may be comfortable specifying very little, and for dense or unimaginative ones you may feel a need to specify a heck of a lot. But even in the worst case you still can't specify *everything*.
