No, that's slightly backwards. First hit New Part, producing an empty Part 19 or whatever, and *then* select Guitar and do Add to Part (making sure that Part 19 is still selected in the Linked Parts list. Then OK when you're done.

Woa, this is kinda unintuitive, and with my English as the Second
Language skill, the manual wasn't too clear about this. Thanks for the
instruction. This is good to know for the future in case I want to
recreate parts.

I am curious, tho. Creating an empty part first seems to be totally
unnatural process to me. Is it OK with everyone else?

The way I think Finale works is that as you create the parts in the score, even as you set the score up, Finale generates a blank part for each staff, and then as you fill in the score, those edits/additions/deletions/whatever are reflected in the parts. Remember that the parts aren't really separate entities -- they are simply different ways of viewing the score, an expansion on the Special Part Extraction, which used to simply show you the score but with all staves except the selected ones hidden.

The linked parts simply takes this one step further, creating a "special part extraction" view for each staff in the score, and also allowing you to create your own special parts, such as putting the two flute staves into one part, or treble and clef staves for a keyboard part. The linked parts feature does a whole lot more than the old Special Part Extraction did, but at its core I believe that's what it has grown out of.

So when you think of it in this light, it's easy to see why the parts are generated even when empty -- they're not really generated at all, they're simply different views of the score you've set up.

The really foolish use of "Generate Parts" as the label of that button in that dialog is something I would have thought they would have remedied already, but certainly hope they will change in some future update or upgrade.

In my opinion that button should be much larger, large enough to incorporate the following text: "Clicking this button will destroy any parts you have already created. Use this button only if you wish to start all over again with all the parts. Simply by adding a part to the above list you have already created the part so clicking on this button will in no way assist you in creating additional parts."

Either that or leaving the button smaller and labeling it "Destroy current parts and generate new parts" followed by a warning box with the text I put in the paragraph above and two buttons labeled "Continue (I realize that my current parts and their edits will be destroyed)" and "Cancel (I wish to leave all existing parts exactly as they currently are)."
