one of his PhD students at the time had actually told him he was
studying composition to get a comfortable job in a university.
I find this extremely hard to believe.
i didn't say he was planning on applying for a composition position;
i seem to recall he wanted to get a theory job. might not work of
course, but t'ain't my problem. the point was that he had no
interest in composition but pursued it right through a PhD...
