I'm on Mac. No alt numbers there. Many of the characters have opt- keystroke combinations (for example, the © symbol is opt-G), but not all characters have opt keystrokes, and I was having trouble finding the ½ glyph in a font that used the opt-keys instead of Unicode. Notice I have no trouble typing it in my email application? I wish Finale was so accommodating!

There is a lovely little app on Mac included with the OS called Character Palette. You can search for any font that has a certain character, and drag it to insert it into your document in the right font. Only problem, the document has to be open in a Unicode- compliant application. Finale is about the only one that I use that is NOT Unicode-friendly (Word, AppleWorks, Mail, everything else is fine!) so I have no access to some characters in most fonts in the text boxes.

The Garamond Extras idea was a good one (as was MetTimes), but I don't have those fonts. I found it finally in a font called WP TypographicSymbol. Sans-serif, but I took it anyway.

Hi Christopher,

Not sure I understand your problem here. Don't the TNR extended characters work on your platform? At the risk of telling you something, you already know, the 3 extended characters in TNR that produce 1/4 (type Alt-0188 with Numlock on), 1/2 (-0189) and 3/4 (-0190). For other fractions try one of the Garamond "Extras" fonts. These all work in the text expressions on my computer.

Good luck!

Anyone know how to get ½ into a text expression? (That looks like
1/2, if your email client isn't showing the glyph, which appears to
be Unicode.)

Finale's lack of support for Unicode keeps putting crimps in my
workflow. My text font for this project is Times New Roman, if that
makes a difference, but I would be happy with another font if I could
get the look and height of the glyph.
