I've seen lots of kilts and there's no way that there are 27-feet of material in any of them. More likely 2 yards maximum to begin with, out of which is cut the material for the kilt.

You're ignoring the pleats, which at least triple the yardage. Two yards? No way! But unfortunately mine is packed away so I can't check and measure it.

Could there have been 9 yards in a plaid, rather than a kilt?

Personally I like the bullet-feed idea best, and if true it makes very good sense, but that doesn't make it correct.
