According to my book (p. 337)
This turn of phrase made me smile, coming as it does from the author
of your book. :)
Do I detect a hedging on the source of the information on this
subject that is include in your book?
It has now been 24 years since the book was published, and 27 since I
wrote the string chapter. I no longer have more than a vague
recollection of where I got a lot of my info, though I consulted a
staggeringly large number of written sources and interviewed many
experts.
As far as the banjo goes, I remember talking to an expert named Elias
Kaufman, a folk/old-timey/bluegrass maven ( quite a few published
articles on these subjects) and player of both banjo and mandolin--but
he was certainly not my only source of info on the instrument, and I
just don't remember the rest.
I don't now, and never did, have all the information in my book
committed to memory, and I use it as a reference book just like anybody
else. Among the things I wasn't quite sure of was the banjo
transposition--so I looked it up, and according to my book...
