I was told back in the 70s that there had been a tradition in Australia
(particularly in pit orchestras) of the 1st bassoon playing a French
instrument, and the 2nd player playing a Heckel system instrument. This
arrangement made the most of the expressive qualities of the French
instrument in the tenor register, and the fuller sound of the German
instrument down low.
