You really have to read the headers of the email to know where the
spam is coming from, and even then, it's tricky to distinguish forged
headers from the real thing.

The best thing to do with spam is NOTHING. Don't respond to it in any
way, either reporting it to an ISP or unsubscribing. Just delete it.

I agree with you except for using the reportspam email address.

I think my ISP set up a reportspam email address not as a complaints department, but as a way to fine-tune their spam filters. I don't believe anyone reads these, they are just data points for their spam filtering programs. I think the contents of the SPAM and sometimes the headers are useful to detect patterns. At least, this is how I understand their literature on the subject.
