Light bulbs are now going on all over my brain. I have struggled with opacity before, when I have specifically wanted to block out certain things, and I couldn't manage it. This explanation makes perfect sense.
Of course, I still think this is a pretty stupid implementation -- especially since Finale doesn't provide any way to specify the front-to-back order of items. But understanding what Finale is doing certainly helps a lot.
