I think to a certain degree the ability to select something like a single 8th depends on what's in the other staves. I can't explain it, and I don't know why, but I've found this to be true. I am able to easily select an 8th if there is nothing in the other staves, but when there is rhythmically complex music in the other staves I can't.

In Fin2008, you can use keyboard shortcuts to expand and contract a selection. So if you've got both 8ths of the 3rd beat selected, do Shift-left arrow and then do Shift-right arrow twice, and you'll wind up with the second 8th selected.

The reason for the left and then right is that the first use of the arrow keys always expands the selection -- and tells Finale which of the selected notes is the anchor or pivot of the selection. So the first Shift-left arrow leaves you with three selected notes, but it also tells Finale that the rightmost note is the anchor. Then you do Shift-right arrow twice to contract the selection.

If you had both 8ths of the 3rd beat selected and did Shift-right arrow, then the first 8th would become the anchor, and no matter what you did you'd never get just the second 8th selected.

This is new, and a little odd, but perfectly consistent once you understand it.

Aaron.
