I have not made much use of the lyrics feature of finale up until now. But I am starting a songbook, and if some one wants to let me know again about some of the issues around lyrics, I would appreciate it very much.

I plan to combine all the songs into a single Finale file, unless I hear it is a really bad idea.

1. Should I create a separate "verse" for the text of each song, or should I place all the text in one "verse"? If they are separate, won't I end up fiddling with base lines a great deal?

My rule is one verse per vocal line of music, i.e. verse 1 for Sops, 2 for Altos etc. This way you never confuse as to which lyric you're editing AND you won't mess up one lyric line if you edit another - which happens if you clone or copy lyrics over. If you have more than one line (or verse 1,2,3,4) for each vocal line of music then you again must split them up into verses (or choruses or sections, it matters not, they are all held in separate and independant 'blocks').

Line returns can be added in the lyric edit box without effcting the text under the music - this is really helpful in organising and separating your text into paragraphs and sections (esp. if you have a long trailing lyrics or sections of Oohs and Ahhs between verses.

A useful time saver for navigating between verses is to use the up/ down arrow keys to move up or down a verse after clicking on the assigned note in 'Type into score' mode. There is no need to keep returning to the menu for this.

2. What is this hyphenation bug and word extension bug I keep reading about here?

3. Is there some way (plugin or program) to recreate all the correct hyphenations and extensions if they get messed up?

Word extensions behave stranger since 2006. They mostly work but I switch them off auto as they slow down the redraws etc. I just do a manual update when I need to see the results. Manual drawing of an extension is buggy in so much that you pull across the handle to draw the ext. and then the line pops back to being smaller than you actually drew, you need to pull it over a 2nd time to get it set.
