There are companies which can recover material even from a formatted drive. In my "day job", I've delivered erased, and even re-formatted drives to such companies, but it is not a cheap undertaking. Last time I asked a price, it was on the order of $1000 per recovered gigabyte. Yes, I did mean that they can recover files from _formatted_ drives. In fact, I was told that if you want to totally eliminate any trace of old data from a drive, you need to format it multiple times, that the equipment and software used for recovery can recover the data from the last seven writes to a sector, even after reformatting by the drive.
