looking at getting a machine for metal ring binding (also poss. for plastic comb for less important things), any suggestions?

I ordered my CoilMac from Nick Carter at NPC Imaging and it was cheaper there than anything I could get around here, even after shipping from US to Canada. Nick is also a super nice guy. The Akiles company that makes my machine also makes binders for other methods, including metal rings, so check them out. Did I already mention that the CoilMac is a fine machine and I am happy with it?

I think Nick only carries the CoilMac, though.

can someone please explain what the 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 "pitch" mean?

The pitch is how close together the holes are. 2:1 is far apart, 4:1 is quite close. I'm not sure what the ratio means exactly, but here's a photo.

some machines punch square holes it seems... can these be used for both coil and for metal bindings?

Hmm, not sure. Check out the Akiles product line in the link I sent above. This should help a bit.

and, um, any other answers to questions i didn't know better to ask would be appreciated 8-)

I didn't even know what questions to ask, and was glad that the machine I ordered had the features I needed but didn't know I needed, like adjustable distance from the hole to the page edge, and multiple passes for longer sheets.

Plastic combs really suck bad. I know you didn't ask, but it was that it was so hard to find a printer close by that DIDN'T offer only plastic combs that forced me to buy the coil binder. Plastic combs are almost guaranteed to break, they don't hold the pages as well, they bind noisily when turning pages, and don't stack nicely when you have a bunch of them.

Coils are different. I have used metal and plastic coils, and the plastics edge out the metals, as they don't kink as badly when mishandled and don't rattle on the music stand as much, even though they are slightly less hardy.

Metal rings might be another question, though. I only have books (no music) that use them.
