I must admit I didn't try it first.
You're right, it messes up the existing measure expressions, but not how I expected it (overwriting, thus deleting them). It overwrites the m.e. only in the stave _in which I did the copying_, i.a.w. it changes the assignment list! So if you do this from a scratch staff, it might work. Haven't tried that out either!

It should be easy. Define a vertical dotted line, measure-assign it very carefully the first time and copy it to the rest of the music. Or am I missing something?
