Kim,
I just looked at my facsimile of the collection and the small
vertical lines are in all the parts just as they are in the new
edition (right before the bar lines). These bar lines, on the other
hand, are, of course, not in the parts. This suggests that the small
lines are simply a way of telling the performer where the
perfections, what we call measures, begin and end, in other words,
"where the bar lines are", so that they can perform the piece
properly. Which means that these lines are somewhat superfluous in
the new edition and a good example of the musicological "overkill"
rampant at the time this edition appeared (1929).

Hi all:
I was able to locate a copy of Praetorius' dance music. I have a
question about the notation: there is a vertical line UNDER the stave,
both in the original sources, and duplicated in modern editions.
Could someone tell me what this symbol notates?
Thanks so much
Kim
