Kim,
I just looked at my facsimile of the collection and the small
vertical lines are in all the parts just as they are in the new
edition (right before the bar lines). These bar lines, on the other
hand, are, of course, not in the parts. This suggests that the small
lines are simply a way of telling the performer where the
perfections, what we call measures, begin and end, in other words,
"where the bar lines are." So these lines are really superfluous in
the new edition and a good example of the musicological "overkill"
rampant at the time this edition appeared (1929).
