OK. I don't know if I was too tired, or what but in rereading what I wrote to Adam:

I have done this in two different ways for different purposes, starting from scratch. The general procedure was to define the staff system, and the layout of the systems on the page. In one case, I had systems in two columns, so that one column contained systems 1 through 6, and the other contained systems 7 through 12; in another case I had the columns so that system 1 and two were on the same level, but in different columns.
I am embarrassed that my response was so lacking in detail, so I'll try to remedy that.

What I wrote was true insofar as it went. I do define the staff systems and the layout of the systems. If I want the music in two columns on the page, what I do is to define system 1 (in page view) to be the width I want, in this case, about 45 percent of the width of the page, and make the staff system that width. So, to illustrate, if the first system is one inch down, I define the margin offset for the first system from the left of the page (for the purpose of illustration, let's assume a 1/2 inch left margin). I then define the offset of the system from the right hand margin of the first system to be a value equal to 1/2 inch, plus one half of the width of the page, so that for the first system, the left hand system margin is 1/2 inch, and the right hand system margin is 1/2 inch, plus half of the page width (again for the purpose of illustration, let's assume US letter size, so 1/2 of the page size is 4.25 inches), or 4-3/4 inches. Of course, since Finale measures right hand offsets from the right edge of the page (or the right page margin), the value would be a negative 4-3/4 inches. For the other systems in the same column, I use the same left and right margin settings, and adjust the setting from the top of the page, or from the top page margin, or from the system above, as needed. The first system in the other column will have a left hand margin offset of half the page value, plus 1/2 inch for the system margin, (4.75 inches), and a right hand margin (-.5 inches).
