Um, which of your examples were taken from Beethoven's own hand? Or even from printed editions that Beethoven himself supervised? If not, then the examples don't mean anything about *Beethoven's* preference, but say something about the fluidity of the printing conventions of his time (and, yes, they were very fluid and inconsistent). But it's not really the question, is it? The question as I interpreted it was: what will be clearest? And there's no doubt that if you're in 3, you beam to the quarter notes (though dotted quarter/eighth is OK). -- David W.
