Experienced musicians working within the well-understood style of
their own musical culture? Gee, I guess that means string quartets
have to have a conductor with a full score. And jazz big bands. And
circus bands. And Dixieland bands--oh yeah, they probably don't use
music at all, because they KNOW where they all should be!
That's a projection of present-day necessities, when many ensembles
are trying to play music from the past 3 centuries in many different
styles, or choral ensembles the music from the past 5 centuries, onto
those earlier musicians, who clearly didn't have our limitations OR
our needs. I don't buy it. But you have every right to believe it.
David has the better feel for this, because he works with that music.
