That's correct. While my finances are better these days than they 
have been in a couple of years, I'm still not in a position to spend 
money on something that is this "optional."

In any event, Audacity was *almost* good enough. I can imagine that 
with recordings other than this particular one, its noise reduction 
would have been sufficient. For some reason, on this recording, both 
of the approaches that were suggested to fix the recording also 
removed qualities of sound that I wasn't willing to give up.

I don't know for certain if more expensive tools could have been used 
more subtly to produce something that me ears would find satisfactory 
(one of Dennis's efforts produced with his normal tools really did 
sound quite good and didn't seem to sacrifice the overall quality of 
sound that I kept losing when I did it in Audacity, and that his 
Audacity edit seemed to lose, too), and that's another reason I 
wouldn't contemplate spending the money for those tools.

It could be that with more practice with Audacity I could get the 
results I want. But at this point, it would require much more work 
than I'm interested in doing.
