First thing to do is open the font, either using the "Charmap" utility
provided with Windows, or alternatively in the lyrics tool of 2010,
choose "Edit lyrics > insert symbol" from the lyrics tool in the menu
bar, and make certain that the font you are using includes the hard
space character. Since the behavior observed when Finale is asked for a
space not in a font set is the empty rectangle, I expect that you'll
find that it does not include the character. In the Finale "insert
symbol" character map, the space for character 0160 will appear to be

Your choices are to use a font editor to add a "real" hard space at
location 0160 in your preferred font, to use the "Lyrics tool > edit
lyrics" option go back after you've entered the lyrics and change the
font of the characters not defined in the font to another font. .
Would anyone like to edit a Windows TrueType font? (It's a nice Time Roman
Semibold!)
Technically, if it's not an open source font, it will likely violate
copyright to modify the font without permission. If you purchased the
font directly, you might try contacting the provider to see if they have
a version with a hardspace built in that you can use.
