A violin quinton is a violin with the an addition string on to, and the top two strings tuned like a viol (in fourths), i.e., G/D/A/D/G. The viola version, or tenor quinton, would be a fifth lower, C/G/D/G/C (the 1911 Brittanica article talks about it (http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/1911_Encyclop%C3%A6dia_Britannica/Violi n), but Wurlitzer-Bruck actually has a violin quinton for sale (http://www.wurlitzerbruck.com/Search/catimg.php?InventoryNumber=INS-

This instrument is just a viola with an extra string a 5th lower.

I think the idea of a lower fifth string is pretty radical -- is the instrument substantially larger than a regular viola?

Although I have seen it in 1996, when I first engraved the trio, I can't remember anymore. I'll ask my client.

Do you like the piece?

Can't see it as I have only Finale 2003.

I've uploaded a pdf file to

home.wanadoo.nl/btouburg/finale

Please take a look and let me know what you think. It isn't finished yet! Well, the piece is, the engraving isn't...
