I'm not a big fan of the VPC system. My primary use is for 10X13 orchestral parts on 70 lb paper.
I find that with the 70 lb paper the tape does not hold the pages securely at all. Inside pages need to be reinforced with additional tape, which makes the binding rather thick. I prefer to make signatures using 3M surgical paper tape and then saddle stapling the pages together. However, for letter size 20 lb paper the VPC system seems to be adequate for booklets of less than 20 pages.
